Braun is a legend within the electric shaver industry. The company has built a solid brand reputation on the back of all the high-quality shavers that it has designed and built over the years.
The company was founded in Germany in 1921, by a mechanical engineer named Max Braun. Originally, the company produced radio sets and by 1929 had become one of the world’s leading radio manufacturers. It was during this time that Braun became a benchmark for quality and innovation, a tradition that the company proudly continues today. During the 1930’s, Braun began to expand into new product lines, an expansion that was only halted with the outbreak of World War 2. After war’s end, Braun picked up where it left off and by the 1970’s, it had begun making electric shavers for the world market.
Introduction to Braun Electric Shavers
There are 4 series of Braun electric shaver to choose from, the 3, 5, 7 and 9 series. To help you understand a little more about what the differences are between them are, we will cover each one before we get into which models are best.
Braun Series 3
The Braun 3 series is designed with cost in mind so it is ideal for people who want a good shave at a fraction of the cost of the other models. There are 4 models in the series, those being the 340s-4, 350cc-4, 380s-4, and the 390cc-4, all of which come in several colors for you to choose from. All feature Braun’s Triple Action FreeFloat system and a powerful motor to ensure high RPM’s. This triple action feature allows the shaver to grasp and cut longer hairs to make for a better shaving experience. Also, to make your shave that little bit smoother, they use a patented head that has a special SensoFoil feature. Most of the 3 series shavers are sealed and therefore waterproof, meaning that they can be used in the shower should you wish to.
Braun Series 5
Thanks to their MicroMotion and MacroMotion technology, and flexible head, the 5 series shavers give a reasonably good and close shave. The head has an impressive 40-degree flex angle, meaning that it can closely follow the contours of your face, while their unique powerdrive system gives up to 20% more power than equivalent shavers. The 5 series built-in UltraActiveLift technology helps to lift hairs up to allow for an even shave, something which is helped by the trimmer’s internal vibration system that helps get cut hairs out of the way to prevent them from affecting the cut. The 5 series shaver also comes with a nice cleaning brush and a great travel case.
Braun Series 7
For many, Braun’s 7 series shavers are the best. Until the release of the 9 series, they won a plethora of awards including Details Magazine’s ‘Best Products of 2014 Award’. The series 7 shavers were some of the first to come with a joint cleaning / charging unit, which cleans, lubricates, dries and charges the shaver, all at the press of a button, and within 15 minutes too. This unit does, however, require cleaning fluid cartridges that have to be changed every few months, which must be purchased from Braun.
So far as the actual shavers go, the most notable units are the 790cc-4, the 760cc-4, and the 720s-4. They are all fully waterproof and feature 3 preset shaving modes for you to choose from. These are extra sensitive, normal, and intensive, and give you plenty of choices when it comes to exactly how you like your shave.
The 7 series is packed full of great features, including Braun’s patented ActiveLift blades that help to lift hairs that might be lying too flat to cut, and OptiFoil flexible heads that are designed to give the closest shave possible.
Braun Series 9
The 9 series is now Braun’s flagship shaver series, displacing the 7 series that until recently, held this crown. Braun’s 7 and 9 series share a great deal in common, so there remains a heated debate as to which one is better. Braun claims that the 9 series gives the fastest and most comfortable shave; something which it claims was proven in recent tests by the IPI Institute in Germany, where the Braun Series 9 9095CC came first. This boost in performance is a result of an improved cutting head system and a bigger motor which generates more RPM and torque. Though most of the mechanics of the 9 series are the same as the 7 series, two other notable improvements are the chrome plated exterior and the improved charging station that the 9 series models possess.
Which is really the best Braun series?
As usual, there are a lot of things to consider before you choose the best shaver for your needs. To give you a better idea of which shavers perform best in each specific area, we have summarized them below.
Overall price of the models increases from the more basic 3 series, all the way up to the 9 series. For the most basic model in the 3 series, you can expect to pay a mere $60, while for the Series 9 9090cc, prices start around $240. Obviously, such a huge difference in price highlights why everyone doesn’t just choose a 9 series shaver, which is priced out of many peoples budgets.
In terms of value for money, this is really a matter of how much you want your shaver to do. If you want a shaver that does the job, but doesn’t cost a huge amount, then a 3 or 5 series shaver is what you should choose. It is definitely worth noting, however, that all Braun products are made to really high standards, and are built to last, so you should consider any of their shavers as an investment worth spending the extra on, should you have the money to spend.
When it comes down to it, shaving performance is the most important thing to consider when buying a shaver. A particular shaver might come with all the extras in the world, but if it doesn’t give a great shave, there is really no reason to buy it.
Here are a few factors to consider:
- Closeness – Winner: Braun 7 and 9 Series
The perfect shave is all about how close the shaver or razor can cut to the skin. In the hands of a professional, a single blade straight razor can give a cut as good as the most expensive shaver in the world. The important thing is that the blades need to be protected from damaging or cutting the skin. So the art of shaving really comes down to these two factors.Though the 3 and 5 series razors do offer a reasonable cut, they simply can’t match the 7 and 9 series, both of which are quite evenly matched in this area. The only discernable difference is that because of the 9 series’ more powerful motor, the ease at which they cut even the thickest hair is definitely faster. If your only consideration is to get the closest cut at the quickest speed, then choose the Braun Series 9 9090cc.
- Comfort – Winner: Braun 7 and 9 Series
Comfort is another very important part of performance. Again, there is little point in getting the closest shave if your face is covered in cuts and consequently hurts. Since most people shave just before they go out to work or a special event, cuts and the patches of blood are the last thing that they want on their face. For years, the 7 series shavers were at the top of the game as far as comfort was concerned. With an inbuilt micro-pulsations system that gently massages the face, and a 3-mode shaving sensitivity setting, they were the most comfortable electric shavers on the market. That was, of course, until the 9 series came along.
The 9 series offered an improved head design that not only slightly improved the closeness of the cut, but improved comfort as well. One of the most noticeable benefits over the 7 series models is that the 9 series shavers’ head doesn’t get nearly as hot after prolonged use. This is remarkable considering that with more powerful motors, their heads are actually spinning faster and so should produce more heat.
- Shaving Time – Winner: Braun 9 Series
Blade design and motor power dramatically affect shaving time, as anyone who has ever tried to shave with a blunt shaver will tell you. When it comes to the closeness of the cut and to comfort, the series 7 and 9 models are hard to tell apart. But as far as shaving speed goes, thanks to their more powerful motors, the series 9 shavers are clear winners in this department.
The Best Braun Shavers in Their series
Best of the 3 Series
Braun Series 3 ProSkin 3040s Wet&Dry Electric Shaver
The ProSkin 3040s is a really great shaver that can be used for both wet and dry shaving. It has 3 specialized shaving elements that thanks to Braun’s SensoFoil, can cut really close to the skin without damaging it. A special micro comb lifts up flat hairs so that this shaver can give a really even cut first time, meaning you don’t need to keep going back over areas it has missed. Furthermore, the head is flexible and thin and is able to really reach all those important areas that many other shavers simply cannot, like under the nose.
Best of the 5 Series
Braun Series 5 5040 Men’s Electric Foil Shaver
Designed with FlexMotionTec with MicroMotion and MacroMotion capabilities, this is a reasonably good all around shaver. Sandwiched between the cheaper 3 series and the far better performing 7 series, this shaver would not be our first choice, but for people who don’t wish to spend the 50% extra that the 7 series models costs, this is definitely a solid option. Performance results are not much better than the 3 series models except in the area of comfort, where this model definitely has the edge. It comes with a handy precision trimmer and a really nice carry bag.
Best of the 7 Series
Braun Series 7 790cc-4 Men’s Electric Foil Shaver
Our all-around favorite, the 790cc-4 definitely takes the prize for best value for money. Though it will set you back somewhere in the region of $150, the performance that this excellent shaver offers can only be beaten by the 9 series models, which cost substantially more. It uses Braun’s patented Intelligent Sonic Technology that creates micro-vibrations in order to soothe and massage the face as it shaves. This shaver has 3 different modes that allow you to actually adjust how close the shave is so that you can fully protect your skin. This shaver was one of the first to come with a clean and charge system that cleans, dries, lubricates and charges the shaver all in one go. This is truly a world class shaver that will always give you world class results.
Best of the 9 Series – Best Performance
Braun Series 9 9090cc
If you are looking for the best possible shave, and are not scared to spend a little extra to get it, then the 9090c is the shaver of your dreams. It is Braun’s top of the line electric shaver and is performance all the way. It won GQ’s ‘Grooming Award’ for being the quickest shaver of 2016, and has since won numerous other top awards.
The shaver features Braun’s Intelligent SyncroSonic technology, which utilizes 4 specialized blades that allow for 40,000 cross-cutting actions ever single minute. Couple this with one of the most powerful motors to ever be put into a shaver, and what you get is a cut that no other electric shaver can possibly beat.
If you can afford the extra cost then this is definitely the shaver we recommend.
